Spanish Holidays Losing Ground to Turkey

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Turkey is gaining ground as a favorite holiday destination for Brits. The Cooperative Travel Group’s director of retail travel, Trevor Davis, said packaged holiday sales for Turkey have increased by 30 percent. Mr. Davis also said sales to Majorca, Spain’s top-selling holiday destination, dropped by 13 percent. Ian Hailes, head of product and development for Cosmos, offers similar statistics. Hailes said 2008 packaged summer vacation sales for destinations in Turkey were up by 25 percent while sales to destinations in Spain decreased by 6 percent.
Poor Economic Conditions
Prior to January 2008, predictions of poor economic conditions in the United States and Europe caused travel agents to cringe. Poor economic conditions, they feared, would cause business to plummet. While some families have elected to enjoy a ’stay-cation’, a stay-home-vacation, many others have not let economic misfortunes impact their vacation time. Travel expenses have caused the usual road-trip to become a flight. Some low-cost airlines have been working with travel agents to help increase their own business as well as retaining the agent’s client base. Agents are able to offer their clients less expensive flights to and from many points in Europe, making the overall cost of their vacation less expensive.
Currency Exchange Rates
It is speculated that the current euro-pound exchange rate is also behind some of the changes in holiday destinations. The pound is doing poorly against the euro, making Spanish vacations a bit more expensive than in previous years. The currency used in Turkey is the New Turkish Lira, introduced in 2005. Exchange rates from the pound to the lira are much more favorable than those of pound to euro. For those tourists who have felt the pinch of a struggling economy, a Turkish vacation could prove to be more affordable for the 2008 vacation season. Where ever their destination, travelers aren’t letting things like the economy and exchange rates ruin their plans. They’re simply learning to budget their vacation as needed.
Low Cost Airlines
Although packaged vacation sales to Turkey have been top sellers in 2008, low-cost airlines are reporting more flights to Spanish destinations being booked than last year. More than 4,000 flights have been booked to Palma, Majorca alone according to reports by the Palma airport.
Top Selling Packaged Vacations for Summer 2008
Dalaman, Turkey tops the list as the number one packaged vacation spot for Europeans for 2008. Following closely behind is Majorca, one of Spain’s Balearic Islands. The third destination is the Greek island of Crete. Turkey makes two appearances on the list, as Bodrum makes the list as the number four vacation destination for Europeans in 2008. Algarve, Portugal rounds out the top five packaged vacation destinations for summer 2008.
Ignacio Vasallo, director of the Spanish Tourist Office dismisses claims that Spain is losing ground as a favorite vacation destination. He said, ‘The big picture is that Spain is going to have 15.5 million UK visitors this year.’ Spain has a lot to offer each tourist who visits and the tourism office officials show no signs of worry that Spain may be losing ground, for whatever reason.

Palma Nova and Magalluf, Majorca’s Most Lively Resorts

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Majorca (or Mallorca as it is also spelt) is the largest of the Balearic Islands off the east coast of Spain, which collectively are one of the most popular holiday destinations in the World. Two of the most popular resorts on the island for holiday makers are Magalluf and Palma Nova, both situated in the south west. For those looking for lively fun from their Majorca holiday, one of these two resorts would probably be a good choice.

The majority of visitors to these resorts are British package holiday makers looking for fun in the sun, and few leave dissatisfied. Palma Nova has three sandy beaches, each with blue flag status, water sports and boat trips and plenty of sports facilities, particularly golf courses in the vicinity. In addition to this, in adjacent Magalluf you will find more watersports including jet skiing, kite surfing and scuba diving, a giant waterpark and a Wild West theme park.

Shopping in Palma Nova and Majorca is probably what you would expect from such a tourist oriented place, with plenty of gift shops, convenience stores and shops selling beachwear and souvenirs. Better shopping is available in the islands capital Palma, a short bus or taxi ride away.

The long promenade in Palma Nova provides Chinese, Italian and Mexican restaurants along with Spanish bars serving tapas during the day. In Magalluf there is also a wide selection of restaurants, many of which cater to British tastes; there are several that even serve Sunday roasts, bangers and mash, fish and chips and other British favourites. As these resorts are generally favoured by young budget travelers, there are also the usual fast food outlets available.

There is a huge amount in Magalluf and Palma Nova to keep night owls and other party animals entertained. In Palma Nova you can expect to find late night bars with DJ’s and dancing, English style pubs and karaoke bars while Magalluf boasts some top class night clubs well known on the European club circuit and competes with Ibiza as the clubbing capital of the Mediterranean.

Both Palma Nova and Magalluf can get very busy during peak season and beaches and sidewalks can become crowded. As such, this area of the island will probably not be a good choice during the summer months for those looking for a peaceful and relaxing break from their Majorca holiday.

Majorca Helps British Cycling Hit Olympic Goldmine

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

The majority of Olympic athletes train their entire lives for a shot at competing in front of the world. Only the absolute best make it that far. Every little thing matters when you’re going for the gold: diet, training, mindset, and support.
In the 2008 Summer Olympics, the British Cycling Team was more successful than even they could have hoped. The team that once didn’t have enough money for proper uniforms took home an astonishing eight gold medals out of a total of 19 for Great Britain.
Under careful and constant leadership, the British Cycling Team worked very hard to shake off the team’s humble history and climb to the top of their game in Beijing. Following their promising performance in Athens in the 2004 Olympics, the team was dedicated to training hard, improving every aspect of their performance, and taking home a pot of gold.
Part of their training equation was superior leadership and teamwork. The entire British Cycling Team, from the helpers in the pit to the team’s performance director Dave Brailsford, worked tirelessly to hone the cyclists’ abilities. Through training and the heartening results of the World Cup, the British team pushed themselves to a new level of greatness.
One of the highlights of the team’s ascent was their performance in the 2007-2008 UCI Track Cycling World Cup Classics series. Over the course of the five rounds, the British team showed incredible skill. But even more than that, they showed admirable team cohesiveness.
In order to get where they were during the World Cup series, and where they are now after the Beijing Olympics, the British Cycling Team had to train like never before. Their routine consisted of up to seven hours on the road every day. The grueling schedule and merciless drive to succeed were somewhat tempered by the luxurious surroundings during part of their training.
The luxurious period of the team’s Olympics training was spent in Majorca; a Balearic Island known for its hospitality and near-perfect weather.
For the British Cycling Team, though, it meant long days of grueling training. The team had a favourite area of tough hills where they would ride until they simply couldn’t go any longer. This is a far cry from the vacations most people spend in Majorca. But if you have to push yourself to the edge of your physical endurance and strength, there’s no lovelier place to do it.
The British Cycling Team isn’t the only group of cyclists using Majorca as an idyllic backdrop to their training. Several other groups of amateur cyclists make their way to the island every winter and spring to train in the beautiful setting. They may not be headed to the Olympics right away, but among those amateur cyclists could be another great British Cycling Team in the making.
All of the elements present in the training of this record-breaking team came together to create something wonderful. Whether it was the brilliant leadership of Dave Brailsford, the tough but effective daily workouts or the overall positive chemistry of the team, one thing is certain. The British Cycling Team of the 2008 Summer Olympics will go down in the country’s history as national heroes, and enthuses Britain to the London 2012 Olympics.

Buying Cheap Majorca Real Estate

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

Are you out to buy a property in one of the most popular tourist destinations in the UK? If you are, we most definitely recommend that you check Majorca, the island paradise of Spain. If you need a holiday home where you can relax and enjoy the sun, the sand and the water, this is the best place you should be. We also prepared a short list of the myths and truths involved in finding Majorca properties to serve as your guide.

Myth: If you are not fond of the beach, Majorca is not for you.

Truth: While Majorca is best known for its beaches and sunny weather, it has a lot more to offer. It has parks, gardens, fashion shops and technology stores, bars and night clubs, and even museums! There is a wide variety of entertainment for the whole family. Whether you like to celebrate during the day or at night, there are activities that you and your kids can enjoy.

Myth: Majorca is only for those who need peace and quiet.

Truth: The place may be near the beach, where you can enjoy the calming sound of water rushing, but do not be led to believe that there is no party in the island! Mallorca can provide you both tranquillity and festivity. As part of Spain, it does not run out of feasts to celebrate. Depending on where you are in the island, a balance of peace and party is for you to benefit from.

Myth: The sports activities in Mallorca are limited to what you can do in the beach, like diving, jet skiing, wind surfing and water skiing.

Truth: Well, yes, you can do all those water sports in most major beaches in the island, but you can do more off the beach. Golf enthusiasts will find the place a good venue to practice their swings. Cyclists can pedal up mountain slopes to amplify the challenge. More than a dozen clubs offer horse riding facilities to those who would love to stroll around on a horse. For those who prefer to simply watch racing horses, at least 2 race tracks have been made available. Do you want to fly? Then, you will find its flight training schools and aero clubs interesting.

Myth: Mallorca properties are expensive and overpriced.

Truth: You pay for what you get. Mallorca has several amenities to offer. It has beautiful scenery to enjoy. It boasts of friendly weather all year. The international market has seen these advantages and has shown interest on the island ever since. Although it is now a very popular destination, its price has remained reasonable and buying cheap real estate is still very much possible. You can ask locals about the different villages, beaches, destinations and practices to get a better feel of the value of the properties. You can also visit their local tourism office and local real estate companies to ask about available villas and apartments that you can check for possible purchase. They can also assist you with the possible requirements as you go about buying a Mallorca property.

Majorca Holidays: not Just About Making Merry

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

To most people, the mere mention of Majorca elicits those all too familiar images of Club 18-30 hotspots – Palma Nova and Magaluf – which have historically been popular with young holidaymakers looking to have a good time. However, Majorca has many resorts which cater towards a more tranquil, easy-going holiday.

Majorca is the largest of the Spanish islands and is part of the greater Balearic Islands archipelago. Situated in the Mediterranean Sea, Majorca has been synonymous with the package holiday industry since tourism on the island began in 1952 and is still popular with young holidaymakers and families alike today. But while the younger holidaymaker will undoubtedly seek the fast-paced hustle and bustle of Palma Nova, Alcudia or Magaluf, those holidaymakers looking for a more tranquil time are also well catered for on the island.

The resort of C’an Pastilla is situated nearby the island capital of Palma. In fact, C’an Pastilla was one of the first resorts to be discovered by British holidaymakers during the early tourist boom of the 1960s and despite its proximity to Palma airport it is little troubled by aircraft noise. The town was originally a small fishing village which has grown since the early days of tourism and many of the buildings and facilities still date back to this period. The resort plays host to a selection of small shops, restaurants and bars, as well as the picturesque harbour, marina and Playa de Palma beach and is an ideal location for those who desire a more sedate beach holiday.

In the opposite direction lies the resort of Paguera, which similarly to C’an Pastilla began life as a small fishing village. However recent years have seen it grow into a popular tourist destination with plenty of restaurants and facilities. Paguera is a much livelier resort than C’an Pastilla, but pales in comparison to Palma Nova or Magaluf. With three picturesque beaches – Playa Palmira, Playa Tora and Playa La Romana – and a large selection of shops, bars and restaurants, Paguera is an ideal spot for those looking for the best of both worlds in their holiday with accommodation to match, whether it be a 5 star hotel or a self-catering, family friendly hotel in Majorca.

The resort of Camp de Mar is situated nearby to Paguera, and although a little off the beaten track compared to many package holidays, the resort is in easy reach of the city of Palma, while the town Santa Ponsa lies just around the bay for those seeking some excitement. The resort has so far managed to avoid major tourist development and manages to convey the impression of being somewhat isolated from most of the other tourist spots on the island, with many of the bars and restaurants being hotel-based. However, this has not stopped the area being popular with the rich and famous, with Claudia Schiffer, Tom Cruise and Michael Schumacher all owning property in and around the area.

From spending lazy days basking in the sun, to enjoying a vibrant, exuberating nightlife, Majorca has a place to cater for most people. With many of the smaller, quieter resorts situated nearby to the more cosmopolitan tourist centres, visitors are well placed to combine both elements. What’s more, flight time from the UK is just over two hours away so holidaymakers needn’t spend a large chunk of their well-earned holiday time travelling. So, why not forget the Club 18-30 stigma of Majorca and discover that island has more than just bars full of boozy Brits to offer?

Majorca Unveils An Historic Estate

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

Vacationers looking for something new to see need look no furthur than the Spanish island of Majorca, where a grand estate is being opened to the public. The Raixa country estate is the newest addition to Majorca’s many attractions, and it will soon be a hot spot for holiday travelers. The estate will give both foreigners and locals a glimpse of Majorca’s interesting past, as well as a close-up of the flora of the island.
The Raixa country estate will offer vacationers a beautiful view of an historic estate. The estate was remodeled in the eighteenth century by Cardinal Antoni Despuig i Dameto, who converted the farm buildings that once graced the land into the architectural wonders that exist today. It’s the tale of a pauper’s house becoming a palace.
The Council of Majorca plans to have the estate open to the public by September. The property was purchased by the council in 2002. Even then, the Council planned to make the estate available for vacationers. Most renovations and preparations will be done by the Oxigeno Project, a program to help former prisoners find a meaningful role in society. Among many of its uses, the estate will serve as a center for environmental studies, according to the council.
Because of its abundant water supply, the Raixa estate is one of the most prosperous fincas on the island. Many films have been shot near the property, the most significant one being Evil Under the Sun. The estate carries a lot of historical significance to Majorcans, and it is one of the most treasured places on the island. The council feels that it is necessary to let the public see the estate and understand the story behind the buildings.
Majorca is already well-known for its natural wonders and architectural glories. The Bellver Castle is an old Spanish castle that was used as a prison during Spain’s more violent times. Now it’s a tourist destination for those who want to see Spain as it once was.
If castles and estates aren’t your cup of tea, try one of the beautiful port towns of Majorca. Porto Cristo provides solace for vacationers looking to enjoy a quiet holiday. The center of the island’s pearl industry, Porto Cristo uses a unique method of combining glass and pulverized fish scales to produce artificial pearls that are nearly indistinguishable from real pearls. While accommodations in Porto Cristo aren’t four-star, their old-world charm makes staying in town worthwhile. At night, the streets of the city are quiet and peaceful, unlike many of the more popular destinations in Majorca. Porto Cristo is popular with middle-aged couples looking for solitude and quiet romance.
The island of Majorca offers a wide variety of attractions besides historic estates, castles and port towns. Whatever you’re searching for in a vacation, this Spanish island is sure to have it. From the glorious beaches, solitary villas and thriving nightlife, Majorca has a little something for everyone needing a change from the daily grind. Take a plane towards Spain, then head east and find yourself in an island paradise.

The Spanish Island of Majorca in the Mediterranean has been inhabited for many millennia, with inhabitations evident from as early as between 6000-4000 BC. Island History

Because of the rich history of the island, there are many historical attractions on Majorca, such as Bellver Castle, Santueri Castle, Palma Cathedral, and El Diablo Castle, each with their own history and their own place in the stories that make up the past of the Island of Majorca. Families might prefer venues like the Marineland dolphin and sea lion shows and the children’s beach.

Beach lovers will adore Majorca, as there are plenty of places to boat, surf, or just sunbathe all over the island. Get from place to place in cars or bikes, or check out the antiquated train that runs still from Palma to Soller and back again.
